Progress Table

Progress Table

Alex recently came up with a great idea: let’s chart our current proficiency level and the time between now and band camp, and measure the rate of improvement necessary to reach our desired level. The result: our Progress Table.

How to use the Progress Table

  1. Play each exercise on the chart with a metronome
  2. Go as fast as you can while playing the exercise correctly, several times in a row
  3. Write the fastest tempo you can reach for each exercise in the Progress Table
  4. Submit your tempos to the staff, listing each exercise and the tempo you reached

Why it’s useful

Using each student’s current proficiency level as a starting point, and the defined standards for each exercise as an end point, the staff will determine how many metronome clicks each student should be increasing their tempo each week. This way, students can plan for and track incremental progress over time, instead of staring at a daunting end goal.

This method provides small, achievable, frequent goals. The staff are hoping that this method will not only help keep students organized & on-track, but will inspire confidence each week when a student’s small goal is reached.

The table is designed to calculate each student’s incremental progress based on their starting proficiency level using simple division.
